This project involved the specialized structural engineering design for a double-story extension at the head office of Plem Construction Company Limited in Lilongwe. The assignment focused on creating a modern, multi-use vertical extension that integrates seamlessly with the existing headquarters’ infrastructure.

Valued at USD 300,000, the design phase was completed within a two-month window starting in May 2023. MK Consulting Engineers provided the technical expertise required to ensure the structural viability and regulatory compliance of the new addition.

Narrative Description of Infrastructure

The design was tailored to optimize space at the Kanengo site, utilizing a vertical layout to separate vehicular and administrative functions:

  • Ground Floor Integration: Designed as an open-plan covered car park, requiring careful consideration of column spacing and load distribution to maintain vehicle maneuverability.

  • First Floor Facilities: The upper level was designed to house high-level administrative spaces, including a executive boardroom and several private offices.

  • Structural Context: As an extension, the design required precise engineering to ensure the new structural frame safely interfaced with or stood independent of the existing office block.

Technical Services and Regulatory Approval

The consultancy provided the full technical backbone necessary for the project to transition from a concept to a permitted construction site. Actual services included:

  • Structural Calculations: Rigorous modeling of live and dead loads to determine the required specifications for reinforced concrete elements, ensuring the building can safely support the executive facilities on the first floor.

  • Production of Detailed Drawings: Generation of comprehensive structural blueprints, including foundation plans, column schedules, and slab reinforcement details.

  • Certification and Compliance: All designs were finalized and certified for submission to the Lilongwe City Planning Committee. This ensured the project met all local building codes and urban planning standards for the Kanengo industrial/commercial area.

Project Leadership

The technical delivery was managed by a focused engineering team:

  • Moses Kalenga (Project Manager): Oversaw the design timeline, client liaison with Plem Construction’s Managing Director, Mr. N.J. Krishnan, and final certification.

  • Hope Sichula (Civil Engineer): Led the structural drafting and technical calculations for the office block.
