This project involved the technical supervision of a multi-functional commercial development in Dwangwa, a key industrial and agricultural hub in Malawi. The development was designed to maximize land utility by integrating commercial retail spaces, bulk storage facilities, and residential quarters into a single cohesive complex.
Managed by MK Consulting Engineers, the project was valued at USD 30,000 and executed over a seven-month period in 2021. The assignment required versatile engineering oversight to manage the varying structural requirements of retail, industrial, and domestic construction within the same site.
Narrative Description of Infrastructure
The complex was designed as a mixed-use facility to serve the growing economic needs of the Dwangwa area:
-
Warehouse Facility: A large-scale industrial storage space designed for bulk goods, requiring reinforced flooring and high-clearance structural framing to accommodate logistics and inventory management.
-
Commercial Shops: Street-facing retail units integrated into the complex to provide localized trade opportunities.
-
Living Apartments: On-site residential units designed for staff or owners, requiring standard domestic structural finishes and utility connections separate from the industrial zones.
Technical Services and Professional Oversight
As the supervising engineers, the team ensured that the transition between industrial, commercial, and residential structural zones followed strict safety and quality protocols. Key services included:
-
Comprehensive Site Inspections: Regular monitoring of the construction phases to ensure the warehouse’s structural integrity and the living apartments’ habitability standards.
-
Quality Control: Verifying material strengths, particularly for the warehouse floor slabs and load-bearing walls of the multi-unit structure.
-
Environmental & Safety Monitoring: Conducting Health and Safety (HSE) checks to manage a safe construction environment and ensuring Environmental Safeguards were met during the site development.
-
Technical Reporting: Providing regular updates to the client, Mr. Muyila, regarding progress milestones and quality compliance.
Project Leadership
The supervision was led by an experienced engineering team:
-
Eng. Moses Kalenga (Supervising Civil/Structural Engineer): Provided high-level technical direction and structural verification for the diverse building types.
-
Thokozani Kadzakumanja (Inspector of Works): Managed daily on-site inspections, quality monitoring, and safety enforcement.
