This healthcare infrastructure project involves the technical oversight of a new, specialized medical facility at Good Hope Hospital in Lilongwe. The development consists of a two-story building specifically designed to house the hospital’s Pediatrics Department, expanding the hospital’s capacity to provide dedicated care for children within a modern, purpose-built environment.

The project, valued at USD 800,000, is being executed under a 12-month supervision contract. MK Consulting Engineers was appointed to ensure that the construction adheres to the specialized standards required for medical facilities, where structural precision and safety are paramount.

Narrative Description of Infrastructure

The project focuses on the vertical expansion of the existing Good Hope Private Hospital campus:

  • Pediatrics Wing: A two-story reinforced concrete structure designed with a specialized layout to accommodate pediatric wards, consultation rooms, and support services.

  • Campus Integration: The building is strategically positioned beside the existing hospital infrastructure to ensure seamless patient transfers and shared utility access while maintaining a distinct environment for pediatric care.

Technical Services and Quality Assurance

Given the sensitive nature of hospital construction, the consultancy provides rigorous oversight across structural and safety domains. Key services provided by the staff include:

  • Structural Design Review: Before and during construction, the team performs detailed reviews of the structural blueprints to ensure the building can support medical equipment loads and meet seismic and safety standards.

  • Site Inspections & Quality Control: Regular on-site assessments to verify that the contractor’s materials and workmanship—particularly in reinforced concrete and specialized medical finishes—align with the approved technical specifications.

  • HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Checks: A critical service for an active hospital site, involving the monitoring of safety protocols to protect workers, hospital staff, and patients from construction-related hazards.

  • Project Documentation: The preparation of technical reports to keep the client, represented by A. Chalamanda, informed of progress, quality milestones, and any necessary technical adjustments.

Project Leadership

The assignment is led by a senior structural expert to ensure high-level technical compliance:

  • Eng. Moses Kalenga (Structural Engineer): Responsible for the structural integrity of the wing, design validation, and the oversight of all technical inspections.
