This project involved the specialized technical design of a modern sanitary landfill to support the Rumphi Water and Sanitation Project. Focused on sustainable waste management, the assignment was commissioned by the Northern Region Water Board to ensure that solid and liquid waste disposal in the Rumphi District meets high environmental and safety standards.
Executed over a two-month period in 2025, the project was valued at USD 16,500. The design focused on containment and monitoring systems to protect the local ecosystem and groundwater from contamination.
Narrative Description of Infrastructure
The design provided a high-capacity, engineered waste containment system featuring:
-
Landfill Cells: A dual-cell system comprising a primary cell with a floor area of 8,405 $m^2$ and a secondary cell with a volume capacity of 4,150 $m^3$.
-
Waste Segregation: Dedicated refuse chambers integrated into the design to facilitate the dumping and management of segregated solid and liquid waste.
-
Environmental Protection Systems: A comprehensive leachate collection system designed to capture and manage liquid runoff, preventing it from leaching into the soil.
Technical Services and Deliverables
The consultancy provided the full technical blueprint required for construction and environmental compliance. Key services included:
-
Engineering Design: Development of the landfill structure, including specialized leachate monitoring and groundwater monitoring systems to ensure long-term environmental safety.
-
Technical Documentation: Preparation of a detailed Design Report and Technical Specifications to guide the construction phase.
-
Procurement and Construction Blueprints: Production of high-precision construction drawings and Bills of Quantities (BOQs) for project costing and execution.
Project Leadership and Administration
The assignment was spearheaded by a focused technical lead:
-
Phineas Mhembere (Team Leader/Design Engineer): Responsible for the structural and environmental engineering of the landfill system.
-
Project Oversight: Managed in coordination with Eng. Ephrone Mwenitete of the Northern Region Water Board.
-
Institutional Context: The project was executed as a sub-consultancy under EMD Consulting Engineers.
