This project involved the architectural and structural design of a high-value educational and residential campus expansion for Loyola Jesuit Secondary School in Kasungu Municipality. With an estimated project value of USD 2,800,000, the initiative aimed to modernize the school’s infrastructure by providing high-quality housing for academic staff and a state-of-the-art learning center for the community.

Undertaken by MK Consulting Engineers, the design phase was executed over a two-month period between February and April 2025. The project focused on maximizing land utility through vertical expansion and ensuring the integration of functional public spaces within a secure school environment.

Narrative Description of Infrastructure

The design covered several key components intended to transform the Loyola campus into a self-sustaining academic hub:

  • Faculty Housing (Family Units): A double-story residential building specifically designed to accommodate teachers with families, prioritizing privacy, space, and modern living standards.

  • Faculty Housing (Single Units): A separate double-story “hostel-style” building designed for staff members without families, providing efficient yet comfortable residential quarters.

  • Community Library: A signature infrastructure piece designed to serve both the school and the wider Kasungu Municipality, fostering a culture of research and literacy.

  • Civil Works and Logistics: The master plan included the design of access roads and a dedicated car parking area to ensure smooth traffic flow and accessibility across the new developments.

Technical Services and Deliverables

The consultancy provided a holistic design package, moving from initial land assessment to high-fidelity visual and structural blueprints. The services included:

  • Pre-Construction Surveys: Conducted comprehensive site surveys to determine topography and soil suitability for multi-story construction.

  • Master Planning & Visuals: Developed detailed site plans and high-resolution 3D visualizations to help stakeholders visualize the aesthetic and spatial impact of the buildings.

  • Architectural & Structural Engineering: Produced a full suite of architectural drawings paired with rigorous structural designs. These ensured that the double-story buildings met all safety and regulatory standards for high-occupancy residential and public use.

Project Leadership

The assignment was managed by a seasoned technical team:

  • Moses Kalenga (Team Leader/Design Engineer): Led the project coordination and engineering oversight.

  • Bankum Malunga (Structural Engineer): Focused on the reinforced concrete and structural integrity of the multi-story elements.

  • Design Support: AutoCAD technicians provided the technical drafting required for the architectural and engineering sets.

The project was coordinated closely with Fr. Kenneth Simalalo SJ, the Head Teacher of Loyola Jesuit Secondary School, ensuring the designs met the specific pedagogical and residential needs of the institution.
